Venerable Anatolie was born on November 23 (according to other sources - on August 30) 1838, in the village of Tărăsăuţi in Hotin county (Bucovina). He attended primary school in the city of Balti. He later graduated from the Theological Seminary in Chisinau and the Theological Academy in Kiev, founded by Saint Hierarch Petru Movilă. He lived on Mount Athos for four years, where he was ordained as a monk in 1865 in the Zografu Monastery. There he learned the Greek and Bulgarian languages, as well as the art of Byzantine painting. He is then sent to help Father Nicholas (the Saint along with the apostles Nicholas Kasatkin), becoming the saint's best collaborator in his missionary work in Japan. Hieromonk Anatolie arrived in Japan in December 1871, while Father Nicholas's activities were still concentrated in Hakodate. He was parish priest of the Orthodox church and superior of the missionary center in Hokodate (1872-1878), professor of the Orthodox Theological Seminary in Japan (Surugadai Kanda, Tokyo), founder of the church in Osaka (1878), head of the Russian Orthodox Mission in Japan ( 1879-1881), teacher and director of the School of Catechists in Osaka (1882-1889). In 1880, Venerable Anatolie was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite. At the end of the 1880s, Archimandrite Anatoly's health began to deteriorate, and in the summer of 1890 he returned to Russia, where he died on November 28, 1893. When Venerable Anatoly came to Japan, in this country were only 50 Orthodox Christians. When he left Japan, there were over 20,000 Orthodox.
